How's it going guys! I hope you are doing well and 2024 has got off to a good start for all of you with some cracking wildlife photography opportunities! Now in this video I thought we would revisit last year and a few of my favourite shots from 2023, breaking down the images, how they were captured and a few of the reasons I personally love these photographs. As I'm always asked about the gear I use when out on location, I wanted to follow on from my last video (on photographing Polar Bears in Churchill) to give you a look inside the bag and kit I took with me up onto the ice! Choosing the right gear can be a headache sometimes, especially if you are limited with weight and baggage sizes for airline travel, so in this video I wanted to discuss some ...

Hello and merry Christmas everyone! I thought I'd save this adventure for the festive season! Back in November I had the most incredible opportunity to head over to Canada, out onto the sea ice of Hudson Bay to walk alongside Polar bears! As you can imagine this was rather a dream trip for me, the Polar bear having been a subject of my ambitions for more than two decades, it was fantastic to ge...

Nikon Z9 or Z8 for wildlife photography? What camera should you buy and why I have both!

Hey Guys, Today I wanted to do a quick video talking about the Z8 and Z9 and discuss a few of the key reasons why you might want to pick one over the other for your own wildlife photography! I had a great time at the weekend discussing this very topic with loads of Nikon shooters at the Birdfair in the UK so thought this might help a few of you out, if you're looking at these two rather epic ca...

Hey guys well it's been a while, but I've been rather busy! Multiple shoots and jobs as well as some big life changes have mixed up the schedule somewhat, but a few weeks ago I was back on RSPB Havergate with my beloved Hares for some more wildlife photography with the Z9 and 600mm f4 Z TC! Oh and yes I know I say I "don't have the 300mm 2.8" but thats just for this trip, that lens isn't going ...

Hey Guys! So the kick off the new year I recently (and rather excitingly) took delivery of my own brand new Nikon 600mm f4 Z TC and couldn't wait to get it out into the field for some photography! @@TomMasonPhoto interesting. I found it too inconvenient to change lenses too much. I usually have 3 bodies with 500mm and 300mm glued to main two. The third is split between 90mm 1.4 and wide angle in darker conditions and 80-200 and wide angle during the day.

    great video, I have one of the gitzo vintage replica tripods {GK2380VQR}, with the GH2780VQR ball head, works great, small and have used it with my H1 and 300mm lens, but YES, do want the 4 series systematic now, the size of that ball head, really what I need for MF and long lenses. I shoot mainly architecture, landscape and seascapes, the long lens work is just for details, from afar, not wildlife, but still a great recommendation, as You are the first to actually mention MF in regards to capacity, THANKS.

      The 42mm Nikon Monarch HG will give a much better view and light gathering ability, for a more compact option the 30mm HGs are great and my personal choice for 90% of my time working with binoculars!

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto Місяць тому

      So between the two the key difference would be the field flattener in the HGs, you’ll get better edge sharpness that’s ideal for watching across the entire frame. Personally I’d be going for the HGs if you want the best performance in the 10/42 range

(How much less light will be with 30 compared to 42). (Is m7 10x30 an option too because i'm trying to be as on a budget and lightweight as possible)

    Great video Tom, still dreaming about owning the 600mmf4 Z TC, what an epic piece of kit! Wildlife watching supplies are ace, I'll never forget Kevin did me a big favour many years back when I needed a lens cover in a hurry for my first 200-400f4VR1 when they first came out, I drove to his place and he used my lens for a pattern and made the cover while I waited, fantastic service, incidentally I still have that cover and it's like new despite much use! Looking forward to seeing news of your other trips this year, have a good one. Cheers.

      I have a photosport 45 In my kit these days, it’s a far more hiking focused bag but with still a significant amount of room for camera gears that’s perfect - it’s also a lot more comfortable on longer hikes!

      @lindonfc Місяць тому

      @@TomMasonPhoto Thanks for the info Tom. Much appreciated. I contemplated going for the 45 also. I like the adjustable torso harness & the extra straps on waist belt to fine tune the fit. Shame the 35L hasn't got the same. I don't understand why all camera bag manufactures don't include torso adjustment. I reached out to Lowepro on the matter. They said they may at least include torso sizings in the future with bag specs etc. Nice that they listen to their customers. Regarding the 45, it's just a bit too big capacity wise. I would end up taking the kitchen sink. 🤣 Would be interesting if you did one of your comprehensive reviews just like on the Gitzo. Cheers John.

    Whenever I shoot a landscape or such I use a tripod and a cable release. When I don't a little voice in my head says "You don't really care about this do you?" and I HATE that little voice. A tripod liberates me, while some say it bogs them down. I can use pretty much any ISO, shutter speed or aperture, as long as the subject isn't moving. If I counted on IS, in any of its forms, I'd still wonder if it was being effective. As far as expense goes I have a large Gitzo carbon fibre tripod and an Arca-Swiss B1 ball head. The replacement cost in Canada is somewhere around $2500. I have maybe $350 tied up in it because it's all used. Tripods and accessories don't have to be state of the art as not a lot has changed. Do the newer leg clamps work better? Maybe. But is that worth $2K?

    inspire to be different that is the key, when I see a bird perched I go and get my typical perched photo then I zoom out and close my F-stop and lower my shutter then go for a greater wide-angle photo of the entire scene, last week I photographed an eagle perched in a dead tree, then zoomed out and set my camera to f/11 and brought the tree and the whole host of other eagles and vultures basking on that same tree into focus.
